Surah 90: Al-Balad
البلد
Ayah 1
I swear by this city [i.e., Makkah]
لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ La oqsimu bihatha albalad — 🔊
Ayah 2
And you, [O Muḥammad], are free of restriction in this city
وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ Waanta hillun bihatha albalad — 🔊
Ayah 3
And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],
وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ Wawalidin wama walad — 🔊
Ayah 4
We have certainly created man into hardship.
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ Laqad khalaqna al-insana feekabad — 🔊
Ayah 5
Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?
أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ Ayahsabu an lan yaqdira AAalayhi ahad — 🔊
Ayah 6
He says, “I have spent wealth in abundance.”
يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا Yaqoolu ahlaktu malan lubada — 🔊
Ayah 7
Does he think that no one has seen him?
أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ Ayahsabu an lam yarahu ahad — 🔊
Ayah 8
Have We not made for him two eyes?
أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ Alam najAAal lahu AAaynayn — 🔊
Ayah 9
And a tongue and two lips?
وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ Walisanan washafatayn — 🔊
Ayah 10
And have shown him the two ways?1
وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ Wahadaynahu annajdayn — 🔊
Ayah 11
But he has not broken through the difficult pass
فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ Fala iqtahama alAAaqaba — 🔊
Ayah 12
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ Wama adraka maalAAaqaba — 🔊
Ayah 13
It is the freeing of a slave
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ Fakku raqaba — 🔊
Ayah 14
Or feeding on a day of severe hunger
أَوْ إِطْعَـٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ Aw itAAamun fee yawmin theemasghaba — 🔊
Ayah 15
An orphan of near relationship
يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ Yateeman tha maqraba — 🔊
Ayah 16
Or a needy person in misery
أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ Aw miskeenan tha matraba — 🔊
Ayah 17
And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ Thumma kana mina allatheena amanoowatawasaw bissabri watawasaw bilmarhama — 🔊
Ayah 18
Those are the companions of the right
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ Ola-ika as-habualmaymana — 🔊
Ayah 19
But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ Wallatheena kafaroo bi-ayatinahum as-habu almash-ama — 🔊
Ayah 20
Over them will be fire closed in
عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ AAalayhim narun mu/sada — 🔊
