Surah 70: Al-Ma’arij
المعارج
Ayah 1
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen1
سَأَلَ سَآئِلٌۢ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ Saala sa-ilun biAAathabin waqiAA — 🔊
Ayah 2
To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer.
لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٌ Lilkafireena laysa lahu dafiAA — 🔊
Ayah 3
[It is] from Allāh, owner of the ways of ascent.
مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِى ٱلْمَعَارِجِ Mina Allahi thee almaAAarij — 🔊
Ayah 4
The angels and the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.
تَعْرُجُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِى يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُۥ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ TaAAruju almala-ikatu warroohuilayhi fee yawmin kana miqdaruhu khamseena alfasana — 🔊
Ayah 5
So be patient with gracious patience.
فَٱصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا Fasbir sabran jameela — 🔊
Ayah 6
Indeed, they see it [as] distant,
إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُۥ بَعِيدًا Innahum yarawnahu baAAeeda — 🔊
Ayah 7
But We see it [as] near.
وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبًا Wanarahu qareeba — 🔊
Ayah 8
On the Day the sky will be like murky oil
يَوْمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلْمُهْلِ Yawma takoonu assamao kalmuhl — 🔊
Ayah 9
And the mountains will be like wool
وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ Watakoonu aljibalu kalAAihn — 🔊
Ayah 10
And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend,
وَلَا يَسْـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا Wala yas-alu hameemun hameema — 🔊
Ayah 11
They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children.
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِى مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍۭ بِبَنِيهِ Yubassaroonahum yawaddu almujrimu lawyaftadee min AAathabi yawmi-ithin bibaneeh — 🔊
Ayah 12
And his wife and his brother
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ Wasahibatihi waakheeh — 🔊
Ayah 13
And his nearest kindred who shelter him.
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِى تُـْٔوِيهِ Wafaseelatihi allatee tu/weeh — 🔊
Ayah 14
And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him.
وَمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ Waman fee al-ardi jameeAAan thummayunjeeh — 🔊
Ayah 15
No!1 Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell],
كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ Kalla innaha latha — 🔊
Ayah 16
A remover of exteriors
نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ NazzaAAatan lishshawa — 🔊
Ayah 17
It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience]
تَدْعُوا۟ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ TadAAoo man adbara watawalla — 🔊
Ayah 18
And collected [wealth] and hoarded.
وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰٓ WajamaAAa faawAAa — 🔊
Ayah 19
Indeed, mankind was created anxious:
۞ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا Inna al-insana khuliqa halooAAa — 🔊
Ayah 20
When evil touches him, impatient,
إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا Itha massahu ashsharrujazooAAa — 🔊
Ayah 21
And when good touches him, withholding [of it],
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا Wa-itha massahu alkhayru manooAAa — 🔊
Ayah 22
Except the observers of prayer -
إِلَّا ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ Illa almusalleen — 🔊
Ayah 23
Those who are constant in their prayer
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَآئِمُونَ Allatheena hum AAala salatihimda-imoon — 🔊
Ayah 24
And those within whose wealth is a known right1
وَٱلَّذِينَ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ Wallatheena fee amwalihimhaqqun maAAloom — 🔊
Ayah 25
For the petitioner and the deprived -
لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ Lissa-ili walmahroom — 🔊
Ayah 26
And those who believe in the Day of Recompense
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ Wallatheena yusaddiqoonabiyawmi addeen — 🔊
Ayah 27
And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord -
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ Wallatheena hum min AAathabirabbihim mushfiqoon — 🔊
Ayah 28
Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe -
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ Inna AAathaba rabbihim ghayru ma/moon — 🔊
Ayah 29
And those who guard their private parts
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَـٰفِظُونَ Wallatheena hum lifuroojihim hafithoon — 🔊
Ayah 30
Except from their wives or those their right hands possess for indeed, they are not to be blamed -
إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ Illa AAala azwajihim awma malakat aymanuhum fa-innahum ghayru maloomeen — 🔊
Ayah 31
But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors -
فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَ Famani ibtagha waraa thalikafaola-ika humu alAAadoon — 🔊
Ayah 32
And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive.
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَٰعُونَ Wallatheena hum li-amanatihimwaAAahdihim raAAoon — 🔊
Ayah 33
And those who are in their testimonies upright
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْ قَآئِمُونَ Wallatheena hum bishahadatihimqa-imoon — 🔊
Ayah 34
And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer:
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ Wallatheena hum AAala salatihimyuhafithoon — 🔊
Ayah 35
They will be in gardens honored.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ Ola-ika fee jannatin mukramoon — 🔊
Ayah 36
So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muḥammad],
فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ Famali allatheena kafarooqibalaka muhtiAAeen — 🔊
Ayah 37
[To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groups?1
عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ AAani alyameeni waAAani ashshimaliAAizeen — 🔊
Ayah 38
Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure?
أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ AyatmaAAu kullu imri-in minhum anyudkhala jannata naAAeem — 🔊
Ayah 39
No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they know
كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ Kalla inna khalaqnahummimma yaAAlamoon — 🔊
Ayah 40
So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings that indeed We are able
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ وَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَـٰدِرُونَ Fala oqsimu birabbi almashariqiwalmagharibi inna laqadiroon — 🔊
Ayah 41
To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone.
عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ AAala an nubaddila khayran minhum wamanahnu bimasbooqeen — 🔊
Ayah 42
So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised -
فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا۟ وَيَلْعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يُلَـٰقُوا۟ يَوْمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ Fatharhum yakhoodoowayalAAaboo hatta yulaqoo yawmahumu allatheeyooAAadoon — 🔊
Ayah 43
The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hastening
يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ Yawma yakhrujoona mina al-ajdathi siraAAankaannahum ila nusubin yoofidoon — 🔊
Ayah 44
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised.
خَـٰشِعَةً أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلَّذِى كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ KhashiAAatan absaruhumtarhaquhum thillatun thalika alyawmu allatheekanoo yooAAadoon — 🔊
