Surah 53: An-Najm
النجم
Ayah 1
By the star when it descends,
وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ Wannajmi itha hawa — 🔊
Ayah 2
Your companion [i.e., Muḥammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,
مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ Ma dalla sahibukum wamaghawa — 🔊
Ayah 3
Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.
وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ Wama yantiqu AAani alhawa — 🔊
Ayah 4
It is not but a revelation revealed,
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌ يُوحَىٰ In huwa illa wahyun yooha — 🔊
Ayah 5
Taught to him by one intense in strength [i.e., Gabriel] -
عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ AAallamahu shadeedu alquwa — 🔊
Ayah 6
One of soundness And he rose to [his] true form2
ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ Thoo mirratin fastawa — 🔊
Ayah 7
While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon
وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ Wahuwa bil-ofuqi al-aAAla — 🔊
Ayah 8
Then he approached and descended
ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ Thumma dana fatadalla — 🔊
Ayah 9
And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.
فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ Fakana qaba qawsayni aw adna — 🔊
Ayah 10
And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed [i.e., conveyed].
فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ Faawha ila AAabdihi maawha — 🔊
Ayah 11
The heart did not lie [about] what it saw.
مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ Ma kathaba alfu-adu maraa — 🔊
Ayah 12
So will you dispute with him over what he saw?
أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ Afatumaroonahu AAala mayara — 🔊
Ayah 13
And he certainly saw him in another descent1
وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ Walaqad raahu nazlatan okhra — 🔊
Ayah 14
At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary -
عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ AAinda sidrati almuntaha — 🔊
Ayah 15
Near it is the Garden of Refuge [i.e., Paradise] -
عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ AAindaha jannatu alma/wa — 🔊
Ayah 16
When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]
إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ Ith yaghsha assidratama yaghsha — 🔊
Ayah 17
The sight [of the Prophet (ﷺ)] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit].
مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ Ma zagha albasaru wamatagha — 🔊
Ayah 18
He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.
لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ Laqad raa min ayatirabbihi alkubra — 🔊
Ayah 19
So have you considered al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā?
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ Afaraaytumu allata walAAuzza — 🔊
Ayah 20
And Manāt, the third - the other one?1
وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ Wamanata aththalithataal-okhra — 🔊
Ayah 21
Is the male for you and for Him the female?
أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ Alakumu aththakaru walahual-ontha — 🔊
Ayah 22
That, then, is an unjust division
تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓ Tilka ithan qismatun deeza — 🔊
Ayah 23
They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allāh has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.
إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ In hiya illa asmaonsammaytumooha antum waabaokum maanzala Allahu biha min sultanin inyattabiAAoona illa aththanna wamatahwa al-anfusu walaqad jaahum min rabbihimu alhuda — 🔊
Ayah 24
Or is there for man whatever he wishes?
أَمْ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ Am lil-insani ma tamanna — 🔊
Ayah 25
Rather, to Allāh belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].
فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ Falillahi al-akhiratu wal-oola — 🔊
Ayah 26
And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allāh has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.
۞ وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغْنِى شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓ Wakam min malakin fee assamawatila tughnee shafaAAatuhum shay-an illa minbaAAdi an ya/thana Allahu liman yashao wayarda — 🔊
Ayah 27
Indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter name the angels female names,
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ Inna allatheena la yu/minoonabil-akhirati layusammoona almala-ikatatasmiyata al-ontha — 🔊
Ayah 28
And they have thereof no knowledge. They follow not except assumption, and indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all.
وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْـًٔا Wama lahum bihi min AAilmin inyattabiAAoona illa aththanna wa-innaaththanna la yughnee mina alhaqqishay-a — 🔊
Ayah 29
So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our message and desires not except the worldly life.
فَأَعْرِضْ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا FaaAArid AAan man tawalla AAanthikrina walam yurid illa alhayataaddunya — 🔊
Ayah 30
That is their sum of knowledge. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who strays from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided.
ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ Thalika mablaghuhum mina alAAilmiinna rabbaka huwa aAAlamu biman dalla AAan sabeelihiwahuwa aAAlamu bimani ihtada — 🔊
Ayah 31
And to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth - that He may recompense those who do evil with [the penalty of] what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best [reward] -
وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ بِٱلْحُسْنَى Walillahi ma fee assamawatiwama fee al-ardi liyajziya allatheena asaoobima AAamiloo wayajziya allatheena ahsanoobilhusna — 🔊
Ayah 32
Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him.
ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ Allatheena yajtaniboona kaba-iraal-ithmi walfawahisha illa allamama innarabbaka wasiAAu almaghfirati huwa aAAlamu bikum ithanshaakum mina al-ardi wa-ith antum ajinnatun feebutooni ommahatikum fala tuzakkoo anfusakumhuwa aAAlamu bimani ittaqa — 🔊
Ayah 33
Have you seen the one who turned away
أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ Afaraayta allathee tawalla — 🔊
Ayah 34
And gave a little and [then] refrained?
وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَىٰٓ WaaAAta qaleelan waakda — 🔊
Ayah 35
Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees?1
أَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ aAAindahu AAilmu alghaybi fahuwa yara — 🔊
Ayah 36
Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses
أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ Am lam yunabba/ bima fee suhufimoosa — 🔊
Ayah 37
And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations] -
وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِى وَفَّىٰٓ Wa-ibraheema allathee waffa — 🔊
Ayah 38
That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another
أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ Alla taziru waziratun wizraokhra — 🔊
Ayah 39
And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives
وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ Waan laysa lil-insani illa masaAAa — 🔊
Ayah 40
And that his effort is going to be seen -
وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ Waanna saAAyahu sawfa yura — 🔊
Ayah 41
Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense -
ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ Thumma yujzahu aljazaa al-awfa — 🔊
Ayah 42
And that to your Lord is the finality
وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ Waanna ila rabbika almuntaha — 🔊
Ayah 43
And that it is He who makes [one] laugh and weep
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ Waannahu huwa adhaka waabka — 🔊
Ayah 44
And that it is He who causes death and gives life
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا Waannahu huwa amata waahya — 🔊
Ayah 45
And that He creates the two mates - the male and female -
وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ Waannahu khalaqa azzawjayni aththakarawal-ontha — 🔊
Ayah 46
From a sperm-drop when it is emitted
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ Min nutfatin itha tumna — 🔊
Ayah 47
And that [incumbent] upon Him is the other [i.e., next] creation.
وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ Waanna AAalayhi annash-ata al-okhra — 🔊
Ayah 48
And that it is He who enriches and suffices
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ Waannahu huwa aghna waaqna — 🔊
Ayah 49
And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius1.
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ Waannahu huwa rabbu ashshiAAra — 🔊
Ayah 50
And that He destroyed the first [people of] ʿAad.
وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا ٱلْأُولَىٰ Waannahu ahlaka AAadan al-oola — 🔊
Ayah 51
And Thamūd - and He did not spare [them] -
وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَآ أَبْقَىٰ Wathamooda fama abqa — 🔊
Ayah 52
And the people of Noah before. Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and oppressing.
وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ Waqawma noohin min qablu innahum kanoohum athlama waatgha — 🔊
Ayah 53
And the overturned towns He hurled down.
وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ Walmu/tafikata ahwa — 🔊
Ayah 54
And covered them by that which He covered
فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ Faghashshaha ma ghashsha — 🔊
Ayah 55
Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt?
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ Fabi-ayyi ala-i rabbika tatamara — 🔊
Ayah 56
This [Prophet (ﷺ)] is a warner from [i.e., like] the former warners.
هَـٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ Hatha natheerun mina annuthurial-oola — 🔊
Ayah 57
The Approaching Day has approached.
أَزِفَتِ ٱلْـَٔازِفَةُ Azifati al-azifat — 🔊
Ayah 58
Of it, [from those] besides Allāh, there is no remover.
لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ Laysa laha min dooni Allahi kashifat — 🔊
Ayah 59
Then at this statement do you wonder?
أَفَمِنْ هَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ Afamin hatha alhadeethitaAAjaboon — 🔊
Ayah 60
And you laugh and do not weep
وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ Watadhakoona wala tabkoon — 🔊
Ayah 61
While you are proudly sporting?1
وَأَنتُمْ سَـٰمِدُونَ Waantum samidoon — 🔊
Ayah 62
So prostrate to Allāh and worship [Him].
فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ۩ Fasjudoo lillahi waAAbudoo — 🔊
